Freedom Flotilla to depart Istanbul for Gaza Strip

21 Apr 2024 - 12:03

A group of pro-Palestine activists are preparing to depart the Turkish city of Istanbul to transport humanitarian aid for the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Freedom Flotilla is preparing to launch the ‘Mediterranean’ ship with the participation for nearly 1,000 solidarity activists from 12 countries to break more than six months of total blockade imposed by Israeli regime against the Gaza Strip, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

The activists are from several countries, including Germany, Malaysia, Palestine, Norway, Argentina, Spain, Canada, and South Africa.

A retired American officer and former diplomat Anne Wright, in her speech at the press conference, announced the opening of the “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” campaign, after a similar aid convoy dispatched Turkey onboard Mavi Marmara ship launched to send humanitarian aid for the Palestinians in Gaza Strip in 2010.

Another activist Fawzia Mohamed Hassan, from the Malaysian Freedom Flotilla movement, pointed out that the aid group comprised of more than 280 important figures including doctors, lawyers, engineers, and professors from across the globe.

He added that the most important demand in this mission is to ensure a ceasefire in the region.

The Israeli occupation deliberately obstructs the arrival of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip by directly targeting relief convoys, which resulted in the martyrdom of many relief workers, including foreign workers affiliated with the “World Central Kitchen” organization.

The Israeli occupation continues to commit massacres, as part of the genocidal war it is waging against the people of the Gaza Strip, targeting inhabited homes and medical and journalistic teams.

The death toll from the ongoing aggression on the Gaza Strip rose to more than 34,000 martyrs, and over 76,000 injured, in addition to thousands of others still under the rubble according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
