“I’m confident that through joint efforts by the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Turkey, friendly relations between the two countries will further expand at bilateral and international levels and in line with the mutual interests of both nations," President Rouhani said in a message to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“This will lay the groundwork for the establishment of lasting peace and security in the region and in the world,” added Rouhani in his message where he also congratulated the Turkish president, government and people on Turkey’s Republic Day.

Turkey was officially declared a republic on October 29, 1923, which is celebrated as the Republic Day of Turkey.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Iranian president paid an official visit to Ankara on June 9.

The first meeting of the Joint Iran-Turkey Supreme Cooperation Council co-chaired by President Rouhani and Erdogan who was Turkey’s then premier, was organized on the same day.

In the meeting, Iranian and Turkish authorities called for the enhancement of their neighborly ties in areas of mutual interest.

Erdogan won the country’s presidential election early in August.
