In coma in the Tehran Pars hospital, Behbahani died of cardiac and respiratory complications on Tuesday after nearly two weeks of hospitalization.

Her stellar poetical flair saw her being nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature and the strength resonating through her words earned her the "Lioness of Iran" epithet.

She was also awarded the Simone de Beauvoir Prize for Women's Freedom in 2009.

She was known for her influential deployment of the lyrical form ghazal.

"Behbahani's works have the entire power of a classical tone, however, it is not in a difficult language, too," Saeed Hamidian, a literature professor at Tehran Allameh University, has said of her.

The first poetry collection of Behbahani to be published following the 1979 victory of the Islamic Revolution was named A Line of Speed and Fire. Then came another work named Arzhan Plain.

Also by the great poetess are such works as Broken Setar and A Window to Freedom.

"She loved Iran and despite the many opportunities she had to go live abroad, she stayed," said a friend and editor of a compilation of her poems, Ali Dehbashi, from Tehran.

"She was tied to the land and her biggest fear was that she would die while abroad."
