A day after Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas vowed to take “legal measures” against Israeli desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque, the holy site was raided on Sunday, October 19, by dozens of Jewish settlers who attacked Muslim worshippers, killing a 5-year-old Palestinian girl.

“A group of Jewish students stormed the complex along with Israeli troops who wandered into the courtyards and verbally attacked the Palestinian religious students within,” the guard, who asked for anonymity, told Anadolu Agency.

Today’s aggression on Al-Aqsa mosque came amid increasing restrictions on Muslims’ access to Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli police since the start of the day.
On the same day, two Palestinian girls were hit by a car of Jewish settler in West Bank, leaving one of them dead.

“Enas Khalil, 5, succumbed to injuries she sustained when she was hit by a settler’s car,” Samir Saliba, head of the emergency department in the Ramallah Medical Complex, said.

Sunday’s incidents followed Abbas pledges on Saturday, October 18, to prevent future attacks by Jewish settlers on Al-Aqsa mosque.

“The Palestinian leadership will be taking the necessary legal measures, at the international level, regarding the aggression of settlers on the Al-Aqsa mosque,” Abbas said in a speech to the Revolutionary Council of his Fatah party, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported.

“We will not allow settlers to attack the mosque,” he added, referring to the entire compound, which is the third holiest site in Islam.

Over the past weeks, Israeli police, ministers and Jewish settlers broke into the holy site, provoking Muslim worshippers in Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The unrest was heightened by the threats of Israeli Public Security Minister to close the holy site to Muslim worshippers.

After three weeks of Israeli restrictions to the world Muslims’ third holiest site, Hamas leader Khaled Meshaa warned on Friday, October 17, of Israel’s continuous attempts to seize al-Aqsa Mosque compound, urging Muslims to defend it.

Al-Aqsa is the Muslims’ first Qiblah [direction Muslims take during prayers] and it is the third holiest shrine after Al Ka`bah in Makkah and Prophet Muhammad’s Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Its significance has been reinforced by the incident of Al Isra’a and Al Mi’raj — the night journey from Makkah to Al-Quds and the ascent to the Heavens by Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him).

Jordan has been supervising Al-Aqsa Mosque and other endowments in Al-Quds since 1948.

A 1994 peace treaty between Jordan and Israel recognizes Jordan’s special supervisory role over holy sites in Al-Quds.
