Iranian researcher wins Germany’s Erwin Schrödinger prize

Laleh Haghverdi, an Iranian physicist, active in European molecular biotechnology laboratory, won the prize for the best interdisciplinary research of “Erwin Schrödinger” presenting the mechanism to design solutions for leukemia treatment, Taqrib News Agency (TNA) has quoted the public relations and information center of the Vice-Presidency for science and technology affairs.

Laleh Haghverdi, active in Helmholtz Institute in Munich, Germany, has won this year’s Schrödinger prize due to a project on designing and presenting new methods and algorithms for evaluating the mechanism of division of tasks in cells during the process of stem cell division.

Researchers have presented a computer model for better comprehension of mechanisms, which control natural production of blood. This model can lead to the design of new treatments for blood and lymphoma cancer.

Once scientists change the rules in this network they will be able to simulate the formation of abnormal cells of leukemia and identify promising passages to design new and effective medications by changing this network until reaching its normal state.

Recognition of mechanisms of such cellular decisions and possible disturbances of this process, researchers can have a new perception in the area of leukemia and immune system diseases.

Erwin Schrödinger Prize is given to the best interdisciplinary research every year mutually by Helmholtz Research Institute and Stifterverband Organization.

Candidates for this award are from executives of researchers defined according to the cooperation and interaction of scientists in the fields of science, medicine and engineering.
