Turkey's plan to establish buffer zone, trick: Analyst

A political commentator has described as a “trick” Turkey’s plan to establish a buffer zone along its borders with Iraq and Syria to counter threats from the ISIL Takfiris, also known as ISIS or IS, Press TV reports.

“I think it smells more like a trick. It’s an insidious trick, I think, cooked up by [Turkey's President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan on his trip to Qatar,” Webster Griffin Tarpley, an author and historian, told Press TV in a Wednesday interview.

On Monday, Turkish media outlets quoted Erdogan as saying that Ankara will work on the plan and weigh the necessity of such a move.

The Turkish president made the remarks on his plane while returning from an official visit to Qatar.

“It seems to me that this is an attempt to somehow blur the border. What needs to be done with that border; is it has to become a bright line border. In order words, close it, in effect. Don’t let ISIS come and go. Don’t let them sell oil,” Tarpley added.

The Turkish government stands accused of providing heavy logistical support for the ISIL terrorists. Ankara is accused, inter alia, of providing the fuel for the vehicles used by the ISIL. Another accusation against the Turkish government is that the plan to invade Iraq’s Mosul was devised on Turkish soil.

The ISIL, in return, sells Iraq and Syria’s oil to the Turkish government at low prices.

From the start of the crisis in Syria over three years ago, Turkey allowed its borders to be used as a conduit for aid, weapons and militants heading to the Arab country, according to reports.

The Takfiri ISIL terrorists currently control parts of eastern Syria and Iraq’s northern and western regions. They have committed heinous crimes and threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and Izadi Kurds, during their advances.

The West and its regional allies, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, are giving financial and military support to the militants.
