On Saturday, artillery explosions rocked the center of Donetsk, which is considered to be the main stronghold of pro-Russia forces.

Ukrainian forces have been closing in on pro-Russian forces in their two eastern bastions of Donetsk and Lugansk.

Several Donetsk neighborhoods have been hit with artillery fire over the last few days and fighting on the city's outskirts has become more intense.

Donetsk officials said on Thursday that fresh shelling by Ukrainian government forces in the troubled eastern city of Donetsk killed at least two people and injured several others.

Local authorities said on Wednesday that clashes in and around Donetsk had killed 43 civilians in a day.

Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Moscow forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence the pro-Russians in mid-April.

The political unrest in eastern Ukraine has so far claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people, according to figures released by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

On Friday, dozens of Russian trucks carrying humanitarian aid crossed into the border with Ukraine and arrived in the Ukrainian city of Lugansk to deliver food and medical supplies to the people in the conflict-stricken regions in eastern Ukraine.
