In a phone conversation on Friday, the Russian president said that the sanctions are also detrimental to global stability in general.

“The Russian leader described Washington’s course of ramping up sanctions pressure as counterproductive, causing serious damage to bilateral relations and international stability in general,” the Kremlin said.

For his part, Obama said that his country is deeply concerned that Moscow is increasing support for pro-Russian fighters in eastern Ukraine.

“The president reiterated his deep concerns about Russia’s increased support for the separatists in Ukraine,” the White House said in a statement.

Obama also expressed concern that Moscow has violated a 1987 treaty that bars the possession, production, or testing of certain intermediate-range cruise missiles.

Both sides urged an “immediate and sustained ceasefire” in eastern Ukraine, according to the Kremlin.

“The two leaders agreed to keep open their channels of communication,” the White House added.

This was the first telephone conversation between the two leaders since the United States and the European Union announced they were imposing a new round of economic sanctions on Russia.

Russian Foreign Ministry said in a Wednesday statement that the fresh wave of Western sanctions against Moscow could lead to higher energy prices for Europe.

The ministry added that the US was punishing the Kremlin for "independent policies that Washington finds inconvenient."

Moscow also warned the US that the sanctions would boomerang on it with “very tangible consequences.”
