US cannot abrogate JCPOA single-handedly: religious cleric

Hujjat al-Islam Sayyed Reza Akrami, in an interview with Rasa news, referred to Iran’s nuclear talks with the P5+1 group of countries in 2015 and stated, “Iran’s talks with this group led to the affirmation of Iran’s legitimacy and the abolition of the United Nations Security Council resolutions imposed on Iran.”

The head of Iran’s Presidential Cultural Council argued that the Security Council, by issuing Resolution 2231, recognized Iran’s right to nuclear energy and said, “Due to the efforts of Iran’s negotiating team, we were able to persuade the West to recognize Iran’s nuclear rights.”

Regarding Iran’s nuclear program, Resolution 2231 set out a strict inspection process and schedule for performance, while paving a plan for the lifting of United Nations restrictions against Iran and called for Iran to refrain from activity related to nuclear-capable missiles.

He added that now, just as before, Iran can continue to use nuclear energy, as well as engage in research and development in this field, and to enrich uranium to the amount that it needs.

Stressing upon the clear violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) by the American President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a fresh round of economic sanctions over Iran’s ballistic missile program., Hujjat al-Islam Akrami said, “The JCPOA is the result of Iran’s negotiations with six major world powers and the United States cannot abrogate the whole of a international treaty single-handedly.”

The member of the Combatant Clergy Association continued, saying, “If the United States wants to break this international treaty and violate its provisions, the Islamic Republic of Iran doesn’t ascribe this action by the United States to the agreement it reached with the five other countries of the P5+1.”

He pointed out that the five superpowers of the world – Russia, China, France, the European Union and Germany – have explicitly stated that any violation of the JCPOA will be at the expense of the United States and if the United States explicitly abandons the agreement, the other parties will continue to adhere to their treaty with Iran.

Hujjat al-Islam Akram stating that the JCPOA has been accompanied by many ups and downs and said, “The greatest benefit of the JCPOA was the recognition of the true face of the United States by the world because now the world knows that the United States is a untrustworthy and militaristic country.”

He said that in international equivalents it’s not acceptable for a government to accept and sign an international treaty but for the next administration to easily violate it.

Pointing out that the behaviour of the United States toward Iran, Russia and North Korea shows that this country is an part of the dissatisfaction in the world, he said, “Over time, it will be proven that the policies of the United States have led to instability in the world and in the Middle East.”

Hujjat al-Islam Akram said, “The United States likes to create problems in the world and for this reason, they have imposed numerous pressures on Iran to force Iran to go along with them but during the 39 years since the Islamic Revolution, Iran has shown it has never surrendered to the hostile policies of the United States against humanity.”

President Trump has accused Iran of violating the spirit of the 2015 nuclear agreement, and has threatened to tear it up. This is while the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has repeatedly confirmed that Iran has been living up to its commitments under the accord.
