More than 4 people have been killed and several more wounded in a car bomb attack claimed by ISIL Takfiri terrorists in Baghdad.

According to security and medical sources, the explosion took place on Friday night at a traffic police compound in Baghdad's Karradah neighborhood, which has been frequently targeted in recent years.

Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan said in a statement that a police lieutenant colonel was among those killed in the terrorist attack, adding that the terrorist had detonated his explosive-laden vehicle at the gate of the compound after he had failed to enter it.

He added that the explosion also inflicted damage on a number of nearby vehicles, including a traffic police car.

The blast also reportedly wounded at least six other people.

Shortly after the incident, the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group, which has been wreaking havoc in Iraq and neighboring Syria over the past years, claimed responsibility for the deadly bomb attack.

In July last year, over 320 people, including women and children, were killed in one of the deadliest bombings to hit the capital's busy neighborhood.

Daesh has recently increased its terrorist activities across Iraq in revenge for the blows it has been suffering at the hands of Iraqi forces and pro-government popular fighters, particularly in the northern city of Mosul, the terror group's last urban bastion in the Arab country.

The Iraqi forces took control of eastern Mosul in January after 100 days of fighting, and launched the battle in the west on February 19.
