Presidential election in Lebanon will lead to a national reconciliation

Middle East expert noted that following the presidential election in Lebanon the disagreements and contradictory policies will remain leading to the image that no solitary group can manage the political arena or make decisions in the country.
Presidential election in Lebanon will lead to a national reconciliation
Mosayeb Naeemi, Iranian political expert on the Middle East issues, in an interview with Taqrib News Agency (TNA) detailed his views on presidential election in Lebanon calling the event an agreement among different political groups in the country.

He said a presidential candidate should achieve two thirds of the votes in the first session and over half of the votes in the second session and added that Michel Aoun has achieved 87 votes of total 128 which is certainly above the aforesaid amount of two thirds.

Therefore, it is predicted to have achieved the majority of votes and the upcoming election is a matter of form and that the result is already clear.

Iranian political expert also referred to a Saudi delegation visit to Lebanon headed by Samer al Sabhan and said,” Saudi Arabia intended to share the public minds otherwise the agreements for presidential election had been made prior to the visit by Saudi delegation to Lebanon.

He added,” Saudi Arabia has never been in pursuit of Michel Auon empowerment and its first plan was election of Samir Geagea, a plan which failed before the second plot for dividing March 8th Alliance.

Mosayeb Naeemi noted that March 8th Alliance, particularly Hezbollah, had supported Michel Auon as its candidate since the beginning and other parties did not achieve a majority to make a change; hence, they had to approve the candidate proposed by Hezbollah.

He added,” Certainly we will witness a presidential election but more important than that is to witness a national agreement. We will witness the sustainment of disagreements and contradictory policies because the belief has been formed in Lebanon that no solitary group can manage the political arena in Lebanon or make decisions for the country.”

Naeemi also referred to Saad Hariri supporting Michel Aoun and said,” This withdrawal is in fact the withdrawal of Saudi Arabia and the US against demands of Hezbollah because previously they intended to bring up their favorite president.

Political expert on Middle East issues added,” What is going on at present, as demanded by Hezbollah since beginning, is that all effective sides should have a say in decision making for the country and it is possible that Saad Hariri or one of his close figures becomes the prime minister.”

According to the Iranian expert, it is an old tradition that the prime minister is from a Sunni tribe, Parliament chairman is from a Shia tribe and the president is from a Christian tribe.
