At least five fighters were also injured as the explosive devices went off near their car in Daquq which resides close to an area still held by the Daesh terrorist group on Saturday.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but it comes as the Kurdistan Regional Government is getting ready for an independence referendum on Monday.

The region is adamant to hold the referendum on September 25 despite regional and international opposition. Critics say partitioning Iraq could be the last thing the country, scarred by years of violence, needs.

The blast comes just days after a separate blast killed three civilians and wounded nine more.

Kirkuk is the capital of the oil-rich province of the same name which is disputed by the federal government in Baghdad and the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan.
