The Best Documentary Award at the 12th Marbella International Film Festival in Spain went to Mohsen Eslamzadeh's 'Alone among the Taliban' on Sunday.

‘Alone among the Taliban’, a 65-mintue documentary, depicts the director’s 15 days of tense and dread-filled experience among members of Taliban militant group in Afghanistan who were armed to the teeth, and with whom Iran carries a dark history after the 1998 attack on the Iranian consulate in Mazar Sharif and the subsequent assassination of 11 Iranian diplomats. Eslamzadeh goes places impossible to visit, interviews the members of the Fatwa council, going through a dangerous journey to make the piece.

The documentary was first screened in the ninth edition of Iran’s International Documentary Film Festival ‘Cinéma Vérité’ in 2015, and won the International Shahid Avini Award for the Best Mid-Length Documentary. Eslamzadeh’s production had its seventh international screening at the Marbella film festival following its participation in other festivals in US, Egypt and Russia. It has also won Best Documentary Award at the 44th Athens International Film and Video Festival (AIFVF) in April 2017.

The 12th Marbella International Film Festival was held on the Costa del Sol in Spain on 4-8 October 2017.
