Indian-controlled Kashmir has been the scene of extreme violence following the killing of a pro-independence figure Burhan Wani by Indian troops.

The tension was high when thousands of residents held a funeral for the prominent leader. The death toll from the recent unrest in the Indian-administered area has risen to over 30.

The protesters were defying a curfew imposed by Indian officials in most parts of the volatile Kashmir. Many believe that the killing of Wani who himself was arrested and tortured by Indian authorities led to such outpouring. Kashmir has reeled under a new wave of bloodshed as Indian troops are in constant clashes with the fighters seeking independence from New Delhi.
