Even if a broader range of people in the US- and other countries- understand Islam, globalization of Islamophobia has not ended.
John L. Esposito, Professor of Religion and International Affairs and of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, in an interview with the Doha-based Al Jazeera television related on the Muslims living in the US under Joe Biden’s presidency, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
He expressed regret that the policies of Biden administration in regards to the Middle East and the world of Islam have not changed much in comparison with Donald Trump.
He noted that the changes are not considerable when limited to appointing some Muslims for unimportant positions.
Since publication of his book “Islam and Politics” in 1984 and then publication of “Islam, the Straight Path” in 1988, John Esposito has turned into an outstanding figure in the field of religious studies and cultural interactions.
When asked on intensification of Islamophobia across the globe, he said,” What I find truly disappointing is that even if the percentage of people from the US- and other countries- understanding Islam has grown, I do not think that globalization of Islamophobia has come to an end.”
He expressed regret that Islamophobia has expanded in Austria, UK, Germany and also countries with few Muslims.
He said that the presence of Islam in the US has nothing to do with immigration since it is an American story held invisible.
Distinguished University Professor, Professor of Religion and International Affairs and of Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, John L. Esposito is Founding Director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding in the Walsh School of Foreign Service.
Esposito has written more than 50 books. The Future of Islam, Islamophobia and the Challenge of Pluralism in the 21st Century, Who Speaks for Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think, Unholy War: Terror in the Name of Islam, The Islamic Threat: Myth or Reality? and also What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam are some of his books.
