At least 33 people have been killed and dozens of others injured in two bomb attacks in Iraq.

One of the bomb attacks took place on Monday, after a bomber detonated explosives in a funeral held in a Husseiniyah, a Shia religious hall, in the town of Muqdadiyah, northeast of the capital, Baghdad.

Some 23 people were killed and nearly 30 others wounded in the incident, with police saying people were mourning the death of an officer killed in a recent roadside bombing.

A separate bombing in a cafe in a Shia district of Baquba, the capital of Diyala Province, killed another 10 people and wounded more than 20 others.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the bombings.

On June 30, a bomb attack targeting football players and their fans in Iraq killed twelve people and injured dozens of others in the Nahrawan neighborhood, southeast Baghdad.

There has been an upsurge in violence across Iraq recently, and Iraqi authorities say Qatar and Saudi Arabia have had a hand in some of the deadly incidents.

The United Nations says a total of 1,045 people were killed and nearly 2,400 were injured in violent incidents across Iraq in May.

Earlier this month, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Representative for Iraq Martin Kobler called on the Iraqi leaders to “sit together” and address the country’s problems, including car bomb attacks.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said that militant groups and the remnants of the former Ba’athist regime are responsible for the latest wave of violence in Iraq.
