‘Iran election increased opportunity to resolve nuclear issue’

21 Jul 2013 - 13:01

Iran’s ambassador to France says the presidential election increased the opportunity to achieve a fair and win-win solution to the Iranian nuclear energy program.

Ali Ahani said the elections increased the possibility of reaching a fair, realistic and win-win agreement within the framework of international law and clearing misunderstandings over Iran’s nuclear energy program.

Ahani added that such a development would have a great impact on maintaining peace in the region and strengthening regional cooperation.

Iran’s President-elect Hassan Rohani emerged victorious in Iran's June 14 presidential election, which was marked by a high voter turnout. He won 50.7 percent of a total of 36, 704, 156 ballots counted.

The Interior Ministry put voter turnout at 72.7 percent.

“Achieving this objective requires the West to set aside its punitive policies and current punishments against the Iranian nation and prepare the grounds for confidence building and pursuing the policy of transparency in Iran’s nuclear [energy] program and its complete cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) within the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT),” the Iranian official added.

The US, Israel and some of their allies falsely claim Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with Washington and the European Union using this unfounded allegation as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.

Tehran strongly rejects the groundless claim over its nuclear energy activities, maintaining that as a committed signatory to the NPT and a member of the IAEA, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
