The speech by Iranian President has been among the most important speeches in the United Nation’s General Assembly this year and many world leaders have listened to that quite carefully.
Basically whenever an important election is held in a country and a new president or prime minister delivers his speech at the UN, that speech is taken seriously because world leaders deal with a new face wishing to know who they are going to deal with for the future years.
This has always been a little different about Iranian presidents. World leaders expect heads of the conventional states for an explanation on their technics for political, economic or at most important regional issues. However about countries that are assumed as unconventional in the international view, the first speech by the new president or prime minister is a touchstone to assess his viewpoints.
In such a meeting, then, no one is expecting surprise news or a declaration of new stances because the basic strategies of the countries do not change with appearance of new heads of governments but it is the methods and diplomatic tools that change.
What is highlighted in these speeches is the judgment method for favorable and unfavorable in the world of politics. It is known to all that in the Middle East and Northern Africa regional arrangements, there is nothing prioritized to the issue of Palestine for Islamic Republic of Iran. The list goes on with Syria situation in the past couple of years, Egypt and also Iraq and Afghanistan as little older concerns with the rest of issues subsidiary to one of these issues.
In the international arena, as clear as daylight, Iran’s nuclear programs and challenges between the US, European countries and Iran are the most important topics and the rest stand comprehensible in the light of these two issues.
Therefore no one is expecting Iran President to announce his intention to change the priorities.
In this situation, to create images that guarantee national interests and security for Iran and convincing world community about them seems to be more fruitful. To announce new policies before a clear change in operations, indicate hypocrisy or fear and to bring any of these images would complicate it to play a role in the regional and international arenas.
It is worthy to remember former Syrian president Hafiz Assad, who having understood the same point, made such a balance in his radical views and functional operation that he was a close friend of Iran and the Arab states at the same time without any hostile relation with the US and western countries, never being counted a direct threat for the Zionist regime, although Damascus was a base for Palestinian fighters and plans for confrontation with the Zionist regime were possibly prepared there.
International arena does not expect Iran to change all or even some aims in its foreign policy. Many of its regional objectives are not basically different from those of Turkey or Saudi Arabia but the wording for expression of these objectives has led to countries like Turkey and Saudi Arabia be counted as conventional states and Islamic Republic of Iran categorized as an unconventional one.
The most important understanding of the world from Iran is the same thing and naturally the most important mission for President Hassan Rouhani in United Nations General Assembly is to change this understanding. If Rouhani can persuade world leaders that what Islamic Republic of Iran is doing in the regional and international arenas is the same as other countries, then he will provide a new understanding of the stable and strategic truths about Iran which will make the top headline for world in this week.
