Iran MPs oppose Jordanian King's visit

15 Mar 2011 - 10:13

The Iranian Parliament's (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has expressed its opposition to the Jordanian King's planned visit to Tehran.

“The invitation and visit of Jordanian King Malik Abdullah is certainly against our national interests at this point in time and given the current conditions,” Fars News Agency quoted the head of the commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, as saying on Monday.

“The opinion of the members of the National Security Commission is negative towards this visit and the Majlis majority also has a similar [negative] view,” Boroujerdi said.

He added that such a visit could be used against the Islamic Republic in the political realm as the people of the region are standing up to oppressive regimes of the region.

In recent weeks, thousands of Jordanians have staged peaceful protest rallies in the capital Amman and other cities, calling for political and economic reforms.

Protesters demanded that the country's prime minister be democratically elected rather than appointed by the King.

In response to the mass anti-government rallies, Jordan's prime minister has announced a pay increase for civil servants as well as the pensions of retired employees and the expansion of a state subsidy program.
