Hanif Atmar's Tehran visit poured cold water on plans to damage Tehran-Kabul ties

23 Jun 2020 - 15:54

A senior Iranian diplomat described as successful a visit by the top Afghan diplomat on Sunday and Monday, saying the agreements made in his meetings in Tehran "poured cold water" on plans to damage Tehran-Kabul relations.

"Agreements were made in all fields and the joint statement came out of this meeting threw cold water on [flames created by] ill-wishers [trying to damage] Iran-Afghanistan relations", tweeted Seyyed Rasoul Mousavi, the director-general of the West Asia office of Iran's Foreign Ministry.
Afghanistan's acting Foreign Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar held meetings with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Secretary of Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani and several ministers.
The visit came against a backdrop of continued tensions in bilateral relations over the deaths of dozens of Afghan migrants at the joint border in May.
The Afghan migrants were allegedly pushed into a river by Iranian border guards and then drowned.
Iran says it played no role in the deaths and they occurred inside the Afghan territory.
But Afghan officials claim the migrants died while they were illegally crossing into Iran.
