Pope Francis, Ayatollah Sistani discuss plight of Palestinians, necessity of coexistence

Ayatollah Sistani stresses importance of joining efforts to boost coexistence and unity based on mutual respect between followers of different religions and denominations.


Bureau of top Iraqi jurisprudent has issued a message following a visit between Ayatollah Seyyed Ali al-Sistani and Pope Francis to release the main topics discussed in the pontifical visit to the senior Shia leader on Saturday, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
 
The two religious leaders exchanged views on the current issues challenging man, role of believing in God, message of the Almighty and also commitment to morality.
 
According to the statement Ayatollah Sistani noted the sufferings of world people including, oppression, poverty, injustice, crackdown of people and also the issues challenging regional nations from war, violence, displacement of nations and economic boycott.
 
The cleric referred to the role of religious leaders in confrontation with the issues challenging the people and expressed hope that the spiritual leaders call on superpowers to follow wisdom and logic and leave the language of war aside.
 
Part of the message by bureau of the senior Iraqi jurisprudent reads," Ayatollah Sistani stresses importance of joining efforts to boost coexistence and unity based on mutual respect between followers of different religions and denominations."
 
Prominent Shia cleric also highlighted the right of Christian citizens, like other Iraqi citizens, to enjoy their right for security, peace and all legal rights.
 
He expressed support for the Iraqi Christian community and all the other people who suffered the most during the war years particularly those living in Daesh-held cities.
 
Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani also expressed appreciation for the pontifical visit to the Arab country.
 
Pope Francis is on three-day visit to Iraq on March 5-8 to meet with a number of political and spiritual leaders in the country and also visit the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Qaraqosh where he will recite the Angelus with believers before celebrating the Holy Mass at Franso Hariri stadium and also the ancient city of Ur, the birthplace of the biblical patriarch Abraham.
