Iran calls for punishment of perpetrators behind chemical attack on Sardasht

The ambassador and permanent representative of Iran to the United Nations office in Geneva, in a speech on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Iraqi Baath regime's chemical attack on Sardasht, called for the identification and punishment of the perpetrators and officials of Saddam Hussein's regime for war crimes by resorting to chemical weapons.


In this meeting, which was held in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations Office in Geneva and the Tehran Peace Museum on the sidelines of the 50th Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva, the speakers gave explanations about the various aspects of the humanitarian disaster in Sardasht.
At the beginning of the meeting, while paying tribute to the chemical martyrs and veterans of Sardasht, Baqai Hamaneh described the inhumane sanctions of the United States in the field of medicine and treatment as a double cruelty to the victims of the Sardasht disaster and noted the fact that the United States and several other European countries, including Germany and Netherlands had an undeniable role in equipping Saddam's regime with chemical weapons.
 
By emphasizing the international responsibility of the governments that supply chemical substances used in the manufacture of chemical weapons in Iraq, Baqai Hamaneh considered conducting investigations, and prosecuting and punishing natural and legal persons involved in the transfer of chemical equipment to Saddam's regime, and cooperating for the rights of victims and survivors of chemical attacks, as the legal and moral duties of all governments and clarified that the criminal prosecution and punishment of the perpetrators of war crimes and those in charge of committing these crimes is everyone's duty.
The ambassador and permanent representative of Iran to the United Nations office in Geneva, by explaining the relationship between international humanitarian law and human rights, emphasized that legal divisions and formats should not prevent the exploitation of human rights foundations and mechanisms to appeal to national and international authorities to propose and pursue the legitimate demands of victims of weapons of mass destruction. Chemicals and their rights.
 
He further called using chemical weapons against the people of Sardasht (and other parts of Iran during the 8-year war), as definitely considered a war crime, as well as a gross violation of the victims' human rights, including the right to life, the right to health, the right to access a healthy environment, also considered.
