Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated that civilians, especially children, are constantly exposed to many gross violations of their rights during armed conflicts.
" According to a recent UN report, children continue to face a high number of serious violations in 2021."
He added: "The United Nations has recorded 23,982 serious violations of children's rights, the most common of which include the killing and mutilation of children, the recruitment and abuse of children for military purposes, as well as the denial of humanitarian access."
Iran's ambassador to the United Nations also pointed out the violation of children's rights in the region, including in Afghanistan, Yemen and Palestine and said that in Afghanistan, in 2021, the United Nations confirmed 2,577 cases of serious violations against 2,430 children, including murder and maiming, sexual violence, kidnapping, recruitment, attacks on schools, especially girls' schools, and intimidation of their staff.
Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated that the Taliban should allow all children, including girls, to go to school. As Afghanistan's neighbor and host to millions of Afghan refugees, including children, Iran has provided basic services such as education and health for Afghan children living in Iran.
Regarding Yemen, Takht-Ravanchi also said that in 2021, the United Nations recorded 2,748 cases of serious violations against 800 Yemeni children, including a large number of dead and disabled children.
He emphasized that Iran supports the ceasefire agreement in Yemen to end the suffering of people, including children.
The Israeli regime continues to commit “the most systematic and flagrant violation” of children's rights in the Middle East, Majid Takht-Ravanchi said.
In 2021, the UN documented 2,934 grave violations against 1,208 Palestinian children in occupied Palestine and the Gaza Strip.
“According to the UN report, in 2021, the Israeli regime killed 86 and imprisoned 637 Palestinian children, 85 of whom suffered ill-treatment and violation of due process by the Israeli regime while incarcerated, with 75 percent reporting physical violence,” said the ambassador. “Moreover, the United Nations verified 22 attacks on schools,” he added.
Takht Ravanchi considered the atrocities to be “clear manifestations of war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
“The perpetrators of such heinous crimes must therefore be brought to justice,” the envoy said.
The representative of Iran at the United Nations emphasized that ending the current conflicts, preventing their reoccurrence, and ensuring full and effective compliance by the conflicting parties with international humanitarian law are all necessary to protect children in armed conflicts.
