Nasrallah says depoliticizing investigation of Beirut Port blast to unravel truth

5 Aug 2022 - 18:38

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah has stressed that depoliticizing the investigation of the August 4 Beirut Port blast, which destroyed the city, killed over 200, and injured more than 6,500, is the only way to unravel the truth.

Nasrallah has stressed that the incident hurt all the Lebanese deep down, noting that the most important challenge faced by this calamity was the politicization of this file.

During his speech at the Central Ashura Gathering in Beirut, Nasrallah pointed out that among those who should have been blamed for the port disaster are the political and media organizations that hijacked this disaster and politicized it from the very beginning in an attempt to make use of the innocent spilled blood to achieve political gains.

The Lebanese Resistance leader pointed out that others also exploited the pain of the families in a shameless and inhumane manner in order to benefit from the incident in their fight against the Resistance and Hezbollah.

Nasrallah stressed that the person most responsible for obstructing the investigation into the Beirut Port blast is the one who refuses to step down, in reference to the examining magistrate Tarek Bitar.

The Lebanese leader called for a return to impartial judicial work, for the judicial process to be reopened, and for holding those responsible for this calamity accountable.

Nasrallah stressed that depoliticizing the investigation is the only way to unravel the truth.

Earlier today, Hezbollah expressed once again its condolences to "the families of all martyrs, Christians, and Muslims, Lebanese and non-Lebanese," as well as the wounded and their families, most notably those who are still in hospitals, on the second anniversary of the tragic explosion at the port of Beirut.

In a statement, Hezbollah reaffirmed its stance, calling for a just investigation into the Beirut Port blast which is based on legal principles and away from any political and sectarian bias.

"We sincerely believe that only justice can mend wounds, establish internal stability, and inspire us all to engage in calm dialogue to overcome the dangerous crisis that our country, Lebanon, is going through," Hezbollah added in the statement.

The statement noted that a massive wave of political and media campaigns have been launched during the past two years, including false accusations and a great amount of incitement which led to rising tensions in the country.

In a similar context, members of the International Support Group for Lebanon (ISG) urged the Lebanese authorities, on Wednesday, to do everything possible to remove any impediments to “the completion of an impartial, thorough, and transparent investigation into the port explosion”.
