Iran advises France to exercise self-restraint

2 Jul 2023 - 17:31

Reacting to the killing of Nahel Merzouk, a 17-year-old teen, the Spokesman of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised French police to stop violence, exercise self-restraint, and look out for protestors' demands.

Unjustified violence by the French police and the orchestrated report of the police from the incident worried the French people about the "Americanization of the French police."

The French police's killing of an Algerian-Moroccan descent (Nahel) exposed the issue of racism, followed by the United Nations Human Rights Office expression of concern about the deadly shooting.
Pointing to the immigrants' issues and the policies of the West, Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman of Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that some European countries' discrimination against immigrants and evading responsibility for the policies caused unfavorable conditions for European citizens, especially in France.
"The French government is expected to avoid violence against its people by respecting human dignity, freedom of speech, and the right of citizens to peaceful protests," noted Kanaani.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Human Rights Office urged the French authorities to respect the principles of compliance with the law, proportionality, non-discrimination, caution, and accountability when using force to deal with people in demonstrations.
Still, Kanaani emphasized the Islamic Republic of Iran's close monitoring of current developments in France, calling on Iranians living in France avoid unnecessary commute to the city.
President Macron called for the implementation of restrictive measures on internet and social networks under the pretext of preventing the publication of "sensitive contents."
French police have so far arrested 1,311 people from Friday night to Saturday, the highest number since the beginning of protests due to Nael's murder in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.
Over the past few days, shops have been looted, and gangs of young people have attacked public spaces across France.
