Iran's FM says agreement reached with Sri Lanka for release of prisoners

In a joint press conference with his Sri Lankan counterpart, the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said: In the framework of the agreements between the two countries, we agreed to release the prisoners jailed in the two countries with a humane approach in the near future."


 At the beginning of this meeting, Amir-Abdollahian welcomed his Sri Lankan counterpart noting, his visit will be a new point for the development of cooperation between the two countries.
 
He added: In today's meeting, we discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues, including economic cooperation, development of trade and tourism, and increasing cooperation in regional and international organizations based on the existence of a common political will to expand cultural, tourism, and scientific cooperation, new technologies and use the capacity of knowledge-based companies in both countries.
 
The foreign minister said: We discussed the existence of some obstacles in the relations between the two countries. Existing obstacles can be easily solved, and some obstacles in the framework of international law were found to have ways out of the current situation.
 
The top diplomat stated: Considering the policy of Mr. Raisi and the priority of looking at Asia, we agreed on the issue that today and in the current century, the capacity in the Asian continent has attracted the attention of the world and the powers and Asian countries more than ever should use the path of dialogue and interaction in line with the interests of the nations with insight and cooperation and looking at the development of the region.
 
Amir- Abdollahian stated: We discussed the fight against drug trafficking and human trafficking and other trafficking issues between the two countries, and strengthening economic and commercial cooperation within the framework of international law is our emphasis.
 
The foreign minister noted that the strong presence of Iranian engineering and technical service companies in Sri Lanka has provided opportunities such as the construction of an oil refinery and a power plant in this country. This is one of the successful projects of Iran's technical and engineering services sector in recent years in Sri Lanka.
