Swedish police protects new Qur’an burning gathering, detains 15 protesters

4 Sep 2023 - 12:14

Swedish police has arrested 15 people protesting against another Qur’an burning incident in Malmo.

Police arrested 15 people in Malmo, Sweden, on Sunday after a clash between protesters and the radical element.

Salwan Momika, an Iraqi refugee and anti-Islamic firebrand, set fire to a copy of the Muslim holy book under police protection in Varnhemstorget, a neighborhood with a large Muslim population.

About 200 protesters reacted by throwing stones and bottles at Momika and the police, trying to stop him from burning the Qur’an.

The demonstration ended earlier than planned as police detained Momika and rushed him away from the scene in a van.

Another man threw himself at the front of the vehicle, trying to block its departure. Police also wrestled with another protester before arresting him.

This incident is just the latest in a disturbing pattern of Quran desecrations, particularly in Sweden and Denmark.

These reprehensible actions have not only strained diplomatic relations between Sweden and Middle Eastern nations but have also resulted in attacks on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.

While Sweden's government has issued condemnations of Quran desecrations in the past, they have asserted their inability to prevent such events due to freedom of speech laws. Consequently, these incidents have compelled Sweden to heighten its terrorist threat level and bolster border security measures.

Meanwhile, Denmark, which has also witnessed public desecrations of the Holy Quran, is now contemplating a ban on burning the Muslim holy book. Sweden, too, is exploring legal avenues to address this growing concern.
