Iran supports UN efforts to end Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza

27 Feb 2024 - 10:28

Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has voiced Tehran’s supports for UN efforts to end Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

"Iran backs efforts by the UN secretary general to halt the war on Gaza and end genocide of Palestinians,” Amir-Abdollahian said in a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.

“The United Nations can count on Iran's help to [establish] sustainable security in the region," he added.

Pointing to his recent meetings with Palestinian resistance leaders in Lebanon and Qatar, he added that the resistance front in Palestine enjoys a very good situation in terms of military power to continue the fight against Israel's aggression.

"However, the Israeli regime continues to perpetrate crimes against Palestinians, and the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, especially in the north, is very disastrous," he emphasized.

The top Iranian diplomat noted that the Palestinian resistance groups support a permanent ceasefire in Gaza but "the Israeli regime, with the support of the United States, insists on continuing the war" which would not avail.

He pointed to the "very grave" humanitarian crisis in Gaza and said Israel has killed thousands of the Palestinian people with bombs and now seeks to starve the remaining population.

Amir-Abdollahian commended the efforts by the United Nations and its chief to send humanitarian aid to Palestinians but emphasized that the extent of the disastrous situation in Gaza is much bigger than the UN aid.

The US is not keen yet to end the war and is rather seeking to intensify the crisis in the Red Sea and Yemen, he pointed out, warning that US military strikes against Yemen would jeopardize joint Iran-UN efforts to solve the Yemeni crisis.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian resistance movements carried out the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.

Since the start of Israel’s brutal aggression on Gaza, nearly 30,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have been killed and about 70,043 others have been injured.

The UN chief, for his part, voiced concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and expressed his firm objection to collective punishment of the Palestinians.
Guterres called for an immediate end to the very complicated and worrisome situation in Gaza.

He said the region is at the risk of an explosion and stressed the need to prevent any measure that would intensify the regional crisis.

The UN would continue its efforts to control the crisis despite all the existing difficulties, he added.

Guterres also hailed Iran's diplomatic efforts to help find a political solution to the war in Palestine and reduce regional crises.

Heading a diplomatic delegation, Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Geneva early on Monday to attend the 55th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) and the high-level segment of the Conference on Disarmament.
