Russia says another 'Anglo-Saxon veto' in UN Security Council on peace in Gaza to be 'bloody crime'

14 Jun 2024 - 13:21

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that another "American, Anglo-Saxon veto" in the UN Security Council on any document aimed at ending the killing of civilians in Gaza and bringing peace to the region "will simply be a bloody crime."

Responding to a question from Anadolu at a news conference in Moscow, Zakharova stressed the global community's unity in the face of the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, which has claimed over 37,000 lives since Oct. 7 of last year.
"The Security Council should accept this signal, hear it and understand that another American, Anglo-Saxon veto in any sphere, in any interpretation of the document, which will pave the way for another important step towards ending the killing of civilians in Gaza and bringing peace and stability to the region, another veto will simply be a bloody crime," she stressed.
Zakharova underscored that "there is no country, not a single one," where people are not united in saying that the situation in Gaza is unacceptable, regardless of which political forces are in power.
She highlighted that, while nations may use different terms – "genocide," "tragedy," "the need to stop violence," or "settlement" – they all agree that the current situation is unacceptable.
"This global understanding of the monstrosity of the tragedy and the unity of the world signal that people on Earth can still negotiate, empathize, and resist evil, despite many differences," she said.
Efforts are often made to preserve global heritage and questioned why children's lives should not receive the same protection, the official pointed out, adding, "I'm talking about Palestinian children now."
