UN deplores environmental damage Israeli war caused in Gaza

19 Jun 2024 - 15:03

The United Nations has issued a report that sheds light on the environmental damages brought to Gaza since the Israeli regime onslaught began on October 7.

The US said Israel’s onslaughts against the residential areas in the besieged territory has left nearly 40 million tons of rubble. Another UN report said earlier that the operation to clear the debris in Gaza will take some 14 years, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

The report added that each square meter of land in Gaza is now littered with more than 107 kilograms of debris which is more than five times the debris left behind in the battle of Mosul, Iraq, in 2017.

Also, the water, sanitation, and hygiene systems are now almost entirely defunct, the report found, with Gaza's five wastewater treatment plants shut down.

Israel's long-term occupation had already posed major environmental challenges in the Palestinian territories with regards to water quality and availability, according to a 2020 report by the U.N. Development Program.

According to the UN report, the conflict in Gaza has led to unprecedented soil, water and air pollution in the region as it has left the sanitation system in Gaza non-functional.
