WHO calls for reopening of Gaza crossings for urgent medical evacuations

26 Jun 2024 - 15:28

The representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the West Bank and Gaza has urged for reopening of the Rafah crossing as two thousand patients in the besieged Strip are in dire need of medical evacuation.

Rick Pepperkorn said Rafah crossing has been the main conduit for evacuations and delivery of the humanitarian aid into Gaza. The crossing has been closed by Israeli forces since the operation they launched in May.

The WHO representative emphasized necessity of evacuation for at least 10,000 people from Gaza adding that the figure is an underestimate compared to the actual number of those in need of emergency evacuation for medical care caused by the war or the chronic injuries.

Meanwhile the health ministry in Gaza referred to the severe shortage of medications and life-saving medical supplies amid the ongoing Israeli atrocities.

The ministry warned that the medications used for emergency, anesthesia, surgeries and intensive care are either out of stock or ran out.

The medical shortages in Gaza are also threatening the lives of more than 1,000 dialysis patients, especially children.

Gaza health ministry also appealed to the international organizations to intervene to provide hospitals with their needs of medications.
