6 Jul 2024 - 8:07

Iranian reformist candidate, Masoud Pezeshkian, is elected as the country’s new president.

The spokesman for Iran’s election headquarters announced Masoud Pezeshkian has won the election with over 16, 384, 403 votes while rival candidate Saeed Jalili achieved 13.538.179 votes.

The two candidates garnered the most votes in the first round of the snap presidential election held June 28.

More than 30,000,000 voters cast their ballots in the runoff vote as none of the candidates won a clear majority in the first round.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, hailed the ‘active involvement’ of the people in the presidential election in a speech just after casting ballot on Friday.

The presidential election in Iran has been held a year earlier due to the martyrdom of late Ebrahim Raeisi and his entourage in a helicopter crash in on May 19.
