Taghribnews (TNA) - Lavrov: Iran Will Not Be Provoked into War

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has strongly condemned the recent assassination of the head of Hamas' political bureau, calling it a deliberate attempt to provoke Iran.

Lavrov pointed a finger at Tel Aviv, suggesting that Israel appears to be the primary actor pushing for a large-scale conflict between Iran and Israel, potentially drawing in neighboring countries. "It seems that Tel Aviv is the only party that wants to start a big war between Iran and Israel with the intervention of neighboring countries," Lavrov stated. He accused Israel of exploiting the current regional tensions to further its own agenda.

Despite these provocations, Lavrov highlighted Iran's restraint. "While Western powers attempt to incite Iran, the Islamic Republic remains resolute in its decision not to engage in a major war," he noted.
Lavrov also touched upon efforts to restore relations between regional powers, specifically between Turkey and Syria. He mentioned the possibility of a future meeting involving Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Syria to discuss further normalization. Lavrov recalled a meeting in 2023 where the defense, foreign ministries, and intelligence agencies of Turkey and Syria engaged in dialogue aimed at improving ties between Ankara and Damascus.
The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, who was in Tehran for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian, marked a significant escalation in the region. Lavrov’s comments reflect Russia’s concern over the increasing tension and its potential to spiral into a broader conflict.
