Iran calls for implementation of security pact with Iraq

12 Sep 2024 - 10:28

Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has called for full implementation of the security deal between Tehran and Baghdad in an effort to confront the terrorists and protect the regional security and stability.

In a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani in Baghdad on Wednesday, Pezeshkian described their meeting as “very good” and emphasized the importance of addressing the weaknesses of previous agreements.

“This trip is a great opportunity to share our views and take the next steps within the framework of signed agreements and understandings. Specialized committees will be formed to implement these agreements.”

Pezeshkian said that 14 memoranda of understanding were signed between Iran and Iraq, marking the beginning of expanded cooperation.

“We will adhere to the agreements and will strongly pursue them in Iran until they are implemented,” he said.

The Iranian president highlighted that Iran-Iraq cooperation to combat Daesh terrorism and smuggling will increase.

He also noted that they discussed the geopolitical conditions of the two countries.

“The two countries are the connecting point between Europe and Asia. The two sides discussed forming a committee of experts and strategic long-term plans to enhance cooperation.”

Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of unity, saying, “If we stand together, we will prevent falling into the fire; we seek an independent, sovereign, and secure Iraq. We emphasize sincerity, friendship, brotherhood, and prosperity in this country.”

Pezeshkian also addressed regional developments, condemning the genocide in Gaza and criticizing the Zionist regime and its supporters.

“The crimes of the Zionist regime in Gaza reveal the falsehood of Western countries and international organizations regarding human rights,” he said.

President Pezeshkian said the Zionist regime calls any Palestinian who seeks to defend themselves a terrorist.

He condemned the regime's actions against women, children, and the elderly, and its targeting of schools, educational institutions, and hospitals with American and European bombs.

Prime Minister Al Sudani described relations between Tehran and Baghdad as deep and longstanding, stating that the proximity of Iran and Iraq can enhance their relations.

“The relations between Iran and Iraq are deep and longstanding, and they are ongoing in various fields,” he said. “The proximity of Iran and Iraq can also become a path for expanding our relations.”

He expressed gratitude to Iran for participating in the gas export agreement between Turkmenistan and Iraq.
