Iran-Saudi Relations on a Positive Path, Says Foreign Minister

13 Sep 2024 - 8:39

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has underlined the special significance of Saudi Arabia in Iran’s foreign policy, announcing that relations between Tehran and Riyadh are progressing positively.

Araghchi, who accompanied President Masoud Pezeshkian on a state visit to Iraq, highlighted the challenges the two nations have faced in the past but credited Iraq and China with facilitating the revival of bilateral ties. "We have had issues with Saudi Arabia in the past, but through Iraq's mediation, and later China’s involvement, we have resumed relations. Over the last few years, these ties have grown steadily," he said.

He also pointed to ongoing political dialogue between Tehran and Riyadh, noting that both nations are now actively consulting on regional matters, a significant shift from the earlier strained relations.
On the economic front, Araghchi acknowledged that cooperation has been slower compared to other areas but is gaining momentum. "Economic partnerships are starting, though they are still behind other aspects of our cooperation," he noted, expressing optimism that economic ties will expand under Iran’s current government.
He emphasized that Iran’s foreign policy under President Pezeshkian's administration is focused on strengthening ties with neighboring countries. "Just as Iraq plays a special role in our neighborhood policy, Saudi Arabia also holds a critical place," Araghchi remarked.
Concluding his interview, Araghchi stressed the necessity of a strong Iran-Saudi relationship for the broader stability of the region. "Saudi Arabia is a powerful nation in the region, and a healthy, cooperative relationship between our countries is essential for peace and stability in West Asia."
