Afghan scholar warns against xenophobia within Islamic communities

16 Sep 2024 - 15:54

An Afghan university professor has called on followers of the different Islamic denominations to remain tolerant in face of each other warning that any xenophobic view in the world of Islam could led to clashes and wars.

Abdul Majeed Samim, in his remarks at the sixth webinar of the 38th Islamic Unity Conference on Monday highlighted the role of hermeneutics in emergence of the different Islamic denominations calling on Muslim people and religious scholars to avoid excommunication that might lead to wars in the world of Islam, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

He said the different interpretation of the Islamic references is the reason for emergence of the different Islamic denomination.

The prominent Afghan academician noted, “The religious references, like holy Qur’an, lifestyle of Prophet Mohammad and other references, are interpretable subjects for hermeneutics and as our scholars had some personal views that affected their interpretations, then that led to emergence of the different denominations each one with their own followers.”

According to the Muslim thinker, the formation of the different denominations has a scientific process based on academic debates.

He called on both Muslim scholars and the ordinary followers of the different Islamic denominations to be tolerant towards each other and avoid excommunication, an issue that might lead to wars and clashes.

He said,” Followers of different denominations should not be xenophobic towards the followers of other denominations as they should maintain the right for followers of other denominations to have a different interpretation of the religious texts.”

He also called on all Muslims to maintain friendly and fraternal look on other Muslims and avoid any attack on their ideologies since enemies will make the best of that as an opportunity to stoke division among Muslims.

The Afghan scholar made the remarks at an online meeting of the Muslim elites held in part of the annual Islamic Unity Conference held by Iran’s World Forum for Proximity of the Islamic Schools of Thought.

The second part of the conference is scheduled to be held on September 19-21 in the Iranian capital Tehran with a number of religious and political figures in attendance.
