Iran hosts IMEX 2024 naval exercise with Indian ocean nations

19 Oct 2024 - 17:26

In a significant display of maritime cooperation, the IMEX 2024 (Indian Ocean Maritime Exercise) has officially commenced, featuring the participation of naval forces from several countries bordering the Indian Ocean. This announcement was made by Second Admiral Mustafa Tajeddini, the spokesperson for the exercise, during a press conference held in Iran’s First Naval Region.

Countries such as Russia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Qatar, and Bangladesh are also participating.

Admiral Tajeddini noted that various naval forces from the Indian Ocean region are involved both as members and observers, with some nations contributing by sending naval units to participate in the drills.
The exercise will feature specialized sessions and workshops aimed at experience-sharing, initiated by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Tajeddini also revealed plans for conducting specialized drills by participating units while heading to the sea. Once at the designated area, vessels and units will engage in various scenarios, including fire control, search and rescue operations, and oil spill containment.
This naval gathering among Indian Ocean nations began in 2008, inspired by the Indian Navy, with the goal of enhancing maritime collaboration to address non-traditional security challenges.
The Iranian Navy, along with the Indian Navy, will preside over two committees focused on security and humanitarian actions during the exercise.
The slogan for IMEX 2024, "Together for a Safe and Secure Indian Ocean," has been designed to reflect the unity of ten countries from among the Indian Ocean member states and observers.
The exercise aims to convey a message of peace, friendship, solidarity, and collective participation.
