The Secretary General of World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought said the United Nations must be held accountable for the humanitarian situation in the besieged Gaza Strip.
Hujjat-ul-Islam Hamid Shahriari made the remarks at the summit of the world religious leaders held as part of the UN Climate Change Conference, COP29 in the Azeri capital Baku on Monday, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
He said,” The organizations designed for world peace have failed as they are unable to stop the murder of civilians in Gaza.”
The senior Iranian cleric also referred to more than 500 resolutions by the UN Security Council, the General Assembly and human rights watch regarding the issue of Palestine and said,” Due to inefficiency of the Security Council, we are witnessing a worsening situation for the people, particularly women and children, in Palestine and Lebanon.”
The Secretary General of World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought demanded that both the perpetrators of the killings of civilians as well as the suppliers of weapons must be brought to the international tribunals.
“World peace will only be guaranteed when war criminals are brought to justice”, said Hujjat-ul-Islam Shahriari stressing Justice as the only way to save humanity from the evil of war.
The comments by the top Shia scholar came at a meeting on global summit of religious leaders on the margins of COP29.
The summit is a part of Azerbaijan's preparations for hosting COP29 which will gather about 300 representatives of the governments, senior UN officials, leaders of international organizations, prominent global religious leaders, scholars, and environmental experts from around the world.
The two-day summit, under the theme “World Religions for a Green Planet,” aims to emphasize the central role that religions play in global efforts to address climate change.
It will highlight a unified stance among the religious leaders who stand against wars and environmental destruction and advocate for peaceful conflict resolution.
