Indonesia welcomes ICC arrest warrants for Israel's premier, former defense chief

23 Nov 2024 - 21:28

Indonesia has welcomed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

In a statement on Saturday, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry expressed support for international efforts to ensure accountability for crimes committed by Israel against Palestine, including actions pursued through the ICC.
"The issuance of arrest warrants by the ICC for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant represents a significant step towards achieving justice for the crimes against humanity and war crimes in Palestine," the statement read.
The ministry called for the warrants to be executed in compliance with international law and emphasized the broader significance of the move.
“Such action is crucial to ending Israel’s unlawful occupation of Palestinian territories and advancing the establishment of an independent State of Palestine, in accordance with the principles of the Two-State Solution,” the statement added.
Jakarta also confirmed its commitment to international peacekeeping, announcing that it will not withdraw its troops from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), saying Indonesian troops will continue their duties in the region despite the escalating conflict.
The ICC’s landmark announcement on Thursday accused Netanyahu and Gallant of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel has launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by the Palestinian group Hamas in October last year, killing more than 44,000 people, most of them women and children, and injuring over 104,000.
The second year of genocide in Gaza has drawn growing international condemnation, with officials and institutions labeling the attacks and blocking of aid deliveries as a deliberate attempt to destroy a population.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its deadly war on Gaza.
