Two Palestinian detainees from Gaza Strip have died while in Israeli custody amid systematic abuse of the Palestinian prisoners in the regime jails.
The detainees were identified as Mohammad Abdul-Rahman Idris, 35, and Moath Khaled Rayan, 31.
In a joint statement, the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission, the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), and the Al-Dameer Association for Human Rights stated that they were informed of Idris's death on November 29, 2024, through the Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority, confirming he had passed away in the Ofer prison.
The circumstances of Idris’ death have not been disclosed yet though according to the statement, he had no known health issues prior to his detention on August 25, 2024.
Meanwhile, Moath Rayan, who had been paralyzed before his detention on October 21, 2024, suffered severe health conditions in detention.
The organizations condemned the ongoing systematic abuse and medical negligence within Israeli prisons, highlighting the cruel and inhumane treatment prisoners face. These include torture, deprivation, and medical crimes, alongside various forms of physical and sexual abuse.
The statement emphasized the alarming number of Palestinian prisoners who have died under Israeli detention, a consequence of prolonged mistreatment.
The institutions also noted that the current conditions in Israeli prisons are disastrous, particularly for sick and injured detainees, warning that this will likely lead to more deaths.
They pointed out that the number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, which exceeds 10,200, is the highest in recent history, with an increasing number of detainees suffering from serious medical conditions and lack of adequate care. There are also more than 90 female prisoners and over 270 children among the detained.
The statement also highlighted the continued practice of enforced disappearances of detainees, especially from Gaza, in Israeli military camps.
