Syria’s UN envoy calls for Israel to withdraw from country

10 Jan 2025 - 15:00

Syria’s newly appointed United Nations Ambassador, Koussay Aldahhak, called for the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from areas they recently took over in Syria.

Aldahhak stressed the need to ensure that Israel does not exploit the current circumstances to violate Syria’s sovereignty and impose new realities by extending its military presence into additional areas of Syrian territory.
He further demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the areas they have recently entered and an end to their aggressive practices against residents.
Since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on 8 December 2024, Israel has escalated its air strikes across Syria, targeting military sites in various regions in what Aldahhak described as a blatant violation of Syria’s sovereignty.
Israel has also declared the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria, deploying its military in the demilitarised buffer zone of the Golan Heights, most of which it has occupied since 1967. The United Nations and Arab nations have condemned this action, which was further escalated by incursions into regions beyond the buffer zone.
Commenting on Syria’s current transition, Aldahhak remarked: “One month on, the dawn of freedom has broken in Syria.”
He added that “following the victory of the Syrian people, Syria is entering a new era of its history where all Syrians come together to build a state of freedom, equality and rule of law.”
He urged the international community to support Syrians and their government in their pursuit of building a better future for their country.
