‘US hoping for Assad ouster in vain"

A top Iranian military commander says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will remain in power despite the US wish to see him gone.
‘US hoping for Assad ouster in vain"

“Despite US dreams and wishes, Bashar Assad will remain [in power] and warmongers will be disgraced by the victory of the Syrian nation,” Iranian Armed Forces’ Chief of Staff Major General Hassan Firouzabadi said on Thursday.

He added that the US is seeking to take advantage of the chaos fueled by Takfiri militants in the region to pursue its own agenda.

Firouzabadi, however, said the Syrian nation will emerge triumphant in the foreign-backed war.
Five years of supporting terrorism and boosting the Daesh Takfiri group in Syria have all failed to force the Syrian nation to give up its resistance, he noted.

Last week, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, visited Syria and reiterated Iran’s support for Assad’s legal term in office.

He also rejected the idea of imposing a president on Syria who would serve the interests of Saudi Arabia or any other party.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011.

UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has furthermore displaced over half of Syria’s pre-war population of about 23 million.
