Ugeux mentioned that he attended a conference organized by the Central Bank of Iran on financial stability in Tehran last month which was, according to him, an “eye-opener to see the quality and depth of the research and the importance that the Iranian leadership attached to the evolution of international regulation.”

The conference also provided an opportunity to assess the reactions of Iranian officials to the aggressive statements of President Donald Tramp, he said.

“The Iranians have now moved to Europe to ensure their development. While America is denying the right to sell 80 Boeing aircraft to the Persian country, Airbus has signed a contract to 100 airplanes to Iran.” Ugeux said.

In private circles with Iranian officials, their message was also clear: At the moment, there is no hope for the United States. We will strengthen our relations with our European counterparts. We have enough work to do and Europe can provide us with the goods and services that we need, he added.

Ugeux noted that despite the increasing tension between the U.S and Iran, Tehran seems to have increased its influence in two key countries in the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan.

“The United States is losing influence in the region at a fast pace. There is nothing there that makes America great again. This is a unique opportunity for leadership. Europe’s position might be more helpful and balanced that the US. It will include Iran as a key player while the White House continues to keep its head in the sand. Being ignorant and partisan is one thing. Being ineffective is much more serious.” he mentioned.
