Lebanon's Grand Mufti has accused Israel of being behind the recent wave of bomb attacks in the country, saying Tel Aviv is the only side to benefit from violence in Lebanon.

Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Qabbani, Lebanon's highest-ranking Sunni cleric, also said on Monday that the recent bombings in Lebanon aim to create divisions among Lebanese people and pushing Lebanon into sectarian violence.

"Israel knows that it won't have stability unless it divides Arabs and their countries," Qabbani said.

The Grand Mufti made the remarks while touring the bomb blast sites in the cities of Beirut and Tripoli.

On Friday, at least 42 people were killed and over 500 others were injured in explosions outside two Sunni mosques in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli.

The blasts were the deadliest attack in Lebanon since the end of the civil war in 1990.

A week earlier, 27 people were killed and many others were injured in a car bomb attack in a Shia district of the capital, Beirut.

No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attacks.
