Islamic organization denounces US anti-Syria war rhetoric

The Islamic World Peace Forum deplored the US threats to attack Syria militarily, saying such rhetoric, together with the arming and financing of the rebels by that country, undermines peace and security in the region and world.

“The US military threats, which complement this country’s military and financial supports for terrorist groups, are a flagrant violation of regional and international peace and security,” the Islamic World Peace Forum, a non-governmental organization advocating global peace, said in a statement issued on Monday.

The US is pursuing its interests in the region in the name of supporting the Syrian nation, and is sending arms to the terrorists under the same pretext, part of the statement read.

"Washington resorted to military threats after it failed to implement its plans against the Syrian government and nation."

Over the past days, the US and its allies have been working on a plot to take military action against Syria after foreign-backed opposition forces accused President Bashar al-Assad’s government of having launched a chemical attack on militant strongholds in the suburbs of Damascus on August 21.

Damascus, however, has categorically rejected the claim, and announced that rebels themselves carried out the gas attack as a ploy to draw in foreign military intervention.

Furthermore, Russia says rebels carried out the gas attack as a provocation. Moscow has repeatedly used its UN Security Council veto to block action against Syria and says any attack would be illegal and only inflame the civil war there.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday if the US had evidence Assad's forces had the chemical weapons and launched the attack, Washington should present it to the UN weapons inspectors and the Security Council.

"I am convinced that it (the chemical attack) is nothing more than a provocation by those who want to drag other countries into the Syrian conflict, and who want to win the support of powerful members of the international arena, especially the United States," Putin said.
