Iran, Italy discuss closer ties

Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi called for closer Tehran-Rome relations on all fronts, and more “constructive” negotiations between the two sides.

“Exchanging parliamentary delegations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Italy can help bring the two nations closer, create an atmosphere for more constructive talks and set the stage for clearing up misunderstandings,” head of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission told Italian Ambassador to Tehran Alberto Bradanini on Sunday.

The Iranian lawmaker also touched upon the current developments in the region, particularly the Egypt uprising.

“The recent developments in the Middle East, especially in Egypt, indicate the regional nations have decided to play a role in determining their fate,” said the parliamentarian.

He concluded by saying that the upcoming trip to Italy by an Iranian parliamentary delegation upon the invitation of the Italian parliament will be an ideal opportunity for both countries.

He also called for the promotion of mutual political, economic and cultural ties in tandem with parliamentary relations.

The Italian diplomat, for his part, said making regular visits would lay the groundwork for further consultations and cooperation, which, in turn, could bolster political as well as cultural ties.

He expressed hope that the upcoming visit to Italy by the Iranian delegation would result in closer cooperation between the two sides.
