Mary Lowler, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders expressed concern over the long detention of Bahraini rights activists due to the legal activities to defend human rights in the Arab country, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
She condemned the long prison terms, solitary confinement and torture and also deprivation from medical treatment for three prisoners Abdul Hadi al-Khawaja, Abdel Jalil Al-Sankis and Naji Fatil.
She stressed," A number of reports show the breaking in Al Khawaja's face, Fatil and Sankis in solitary confinement deprived of medical treatments and practicing their religion while the last one was forced to confess and his books seized."
Mary Lawler expressed regret that the human rights activists were tried over peaceful and legal efforts and that the detention has not only affected their lives but also left terrible effects on the civil ambiance in the country.
