Iran, Tajikistan eyeing on boosting defense cooperation

Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces arrived in Tajikistan at the head of a high-level military delegation to promote and develop joint defense and military cooperation with Tajikistan.
Following the independence of the Republic of Tajikistan On September 9, 1991, the Islamic Republic of Iran became the first country to recognize the independence of Tajikistan and opened its embassy in Dushanbe.
Although Tajikistan is not a neighbor of Iran, the two countries have many historical, cultural and linguistic ties.
Upon arrival in Dushanbe, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was welcomed by Major General Imam Ali Saberzadeh, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces and First Deputy Minister of Defense and a group of Tajik military officials.
During the visit, Maj. General Bagheri will meet with the President of Tajikistan and visit the military and scientific centers of the Armed Forces of Tajikistan.
General Bagheri mentioned the strengthening and development of military and defense cooperation between the two countries of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Tajikistan as the main goals of the visit and said that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Tajikistan are in a geopolitical region and the events of both countries will affect each other.
Referring to the policy of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to develop relations with its neighbors, Major General Bagheri added that in order to improve security, peace of both countries, he will have bilateral meetings with military and political officials.
