World bodies, countries hail ICJ ruling against Israel occupation of Palestine

The United Nations said that its Secretary-General, António Guterres, is set to refer the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to the General Assembly, which requested the court’s advice on procedures related to the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.

On Friday, the International Court of Justice said “Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful”, adding that the regime “is under an obligation” to end it “as rapidly as possible.”

The 83-page advisory opinion read out by court President Nawaf Salam outlined a wide list of policies that it said violated international law, including the building and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east al-Quds.

A statement issued by the United Nations in Guterres' name last night said, "It is up to the General Assembly to decide how to move forward in this matter."

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomed the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on the ‘unlawful’ Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

OIC stressed in a press statement the need to follow-up on the implementation of the ICJ’s advisory opinion, which ruled that Israel's decades-long occupation and settler-colonialism of the Palestinian territories is "unlawful" and should be brought to an end "as rapidly as possible”.

OIC expressed appreciation for the positions of the states that have supported and joined the ICJ’s procedures to ensure justice and international protection of the Palestinian people and defend the Palestinians’ legitimate rights.

It stressed the need for the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to shoulder its responsibilities and take the procedures necessary to guarantee the implementation of the ICJ’s advisory opinion and bring an end to the unlawful Israeli occupation and settler-colonialism of the Palestinian territories.

and enable the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination, including the right to establish its sovereign independent state based on the June 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital.

Also, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs today welcomed the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on the ‘unlawful’ Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

It stressed in a press release the need for taking practical and credible steps to achieve a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian question in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and UN resolutions, so that it guarantees the Palestinian people their right to exercise self-determination and sovereignty in their independent State, based on the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
