The UN agency for children (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have urged for a humanitarian pause for delivery of 1.2 million doses of polio vaccine into the Gaza Strip, reported Taqrib News Agency (TNA).
The call by the UN agencies come after a confirmed case of the disease in a ten-month-old baby in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza.
In July 2024, polio was detected in water samples from the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah raising concerns for resurface of the life-long paralysis among the children in Gaza Strip.
International organizations have blamed the damaged water and waste water infrastructures for the new cases of polio seen after more than two decades in Gaza.
The international bodies have called for a pause in the fighting in order to vaccinate more than 640,000 children under 10 which is unlikely to be followed due to repeated evacuation orders issued by Israeli regime pushing Palestinian families to leave for so-called safe zones.
